The Challenge
The translation of bilingual technical texts from English to Russian directly in CAD
The service was entrusted to us by a multinational manufacturer of equipment and components used in various industries, such as food machinery, packaging, mechanical engineering, textile, paper and wood, oil and gas.
Managing a CAD file in languages such as English and Russian presents two difficulties: the use of two different alphabets and the drastic differences in length of the two texts. Russian, in fact, is on average 30% longer!
In fact, the translators themselves must take into account that Russian is much longer than English and it requires solutions to be agreed together with the customer, not only on the layout, fonts to be used, etc., but also on the possible different wording of the text.
What is expected from us?
- a clear and technically accurate translation in order to guarantee safety and autonomy for the machine operator. When instructions in foreign language documentation are clear, it is possible to use and maintain the machines easily, minimising customers’ need for remote or on-site technical assistance;
- a partner who can handle the technical documentation directly in the source software, thus offering an all-round service;
- the translation in DWG format, in this case bilingual, on one or more layers (as requested in the past by the technical departments of other multinational customers of ours).
The translators of technical texts must master the specific terminology of the mechanical, plant equipment, and engineering sectors and be able to communicate with extreme accuracy in the target language, according to the recommendations of technical writing standards, all while strictly adhering to the particular layout agreements, as well as the set delivery schedules!
Our Solution
A dedicated Project Manager assigned a team of linguists and experts in this specific sector in the required language pairs. In agreement with the client on the solutions he preferred, the team worked directly in CAD so that each page in English, together with its illustrations and tables, would correspond to the same page in Russian.
For this project, we drew on over 40 years of experience in the translation and page layout of technical texts, including instruction manuals, user and maintenance manuals, technical files, product catalogues and spare parts catalogues, technical data sheets, software and quality system documentation mainly for multinational companies working in the same industries.
