It also selects specific glossaries (by sector and client) and the reference material indicated by the Linguistic Resources Manager (LRM), and specifies the subsequent checks to be performed. o Production and reviewing: once the translation has been completed, the text undergoes a series of planned checks to ensure that the translation conforms to the requirements agreed upon with the client at the time the job was contracted. Any auxiliary services identified during the planning phase are also provided. o Delivery: Interlinguae delivers the document(s) required to the client in the format and media specified. Job-related material is then archived according to the procedures outlined in the Quality System to ensure traceability. o Follow up: through on-going contact with the client and through meetings and surveys, Interlinguae verifies the level of customer satisfaction, eliciting any suggestions that could improve the service it provides. Glossaries & Terminology Back to top Interlinguae has an in-house department dedicated to Linguistic-Terminological research, an area that is of fundamental importance with clear-cut objectives: o Validated, up-to-date client glossaries: Each time a first translation is done for a given sector or client, a supplementary glossary is prepared with the help of experts in the field and through research within the target countries. With each subsequent translation, this glossary is given to the translator who updates and makes additions to it giving the source of each new term. The Linguistic Resources Manager oversees the entire glossary creation, management, checking and validation process (including with the client) in order to guarantee the most appropriate and consistent possible application of the terminology used. o Research and testing: the Linguistic Resources Manager analyzes and tests the functioning and applications of software available on the market for the creation of terminology databases and translation memories. o Personnel training: The LRM provides back-up for and promotes personnel training to make them more autonomous and skilled in the use of glossary-creation and -management tools, assisted translation and search of resources on the Web. Back to top Interlinguae makes its acquired expertise and skill available to customers, right from the choice of what kind of interpreting service is best adapted to their specific needs. o Simultaneous interpreting is oral translation normally performed by a pair of interpreters per language who follow the presentations through headsets and simultaneously translate for a group of listeners. Those listening have headsets for following the simultaneous translation in their own tongue. Simultaneous services are normally organized for international conferences, conventions and meetings. o Simultaneous chuchotage interpreting If during a conference or meeting just a single individual requires the presentations to be translated, a simultaneous interpreter may be assigned who whispers the translation into the attendee's ear. This service is normally performed by just one simultaneous interpreter per language. o Consecutive interpreting is performed by simultaneous interpreters who translate what a speaker is saying without the use of headsets at intervals of 5-10 minutes. This type of interpreting is used when only one foreign language is required and normally for short meetings with a limited number of participants. o Liaison interpreting refers to the service of a single interpreter who translates during a business meeting between two or more individuals at a company's facilities and who accompanies the parties during the visit of the plant, to other customers, etc. This type of service also includes interpreting for the training of technical personnel, accompanying of foreign delegations and linguistic assistance during fairs or other events. Every interpreter has his or her own field of specialisation and type of interpreting, each of which requires specific expertise and skills. o Simultaneous: concentration and a regular pace. Translating as the speaker talks means having to listen in one language and speaking in another while leaving out very little. Despite the fact that the interpreter is dependent on the pace of the speaker, on the other hand he or she must reproduce the translation in a regular flow without stopping and then running to catch up, while at the same time avoiding a mechanical, expressionless tone that could put listeners to sleep! Qualifications required for this type of activity: Degree in Simultaneous Interpreting or Diploma as a Parliamentary Interpreter. o Consecutive: Excellent overall level of culture and speaking skills. The interpreter knows that when he or she begins to interpret, the audience has already been listening to the speaker for approximately ten minutes without having understood what was said. Therefore, using notes taken utilizing a special technique, the interpreter must "package" a discourse that reproduces the speaker's discourse in an effective manner, without leaving out any information and summarizing the basic concepts. Qualifications required for this type of activity: Degree in Simultaneous Interpreting or Diploma as a Parliamentary Interpreter. o Liaison: intuition, good communication skills, light appetite. Making sure that two people speak to and understand each other is a delicate task, even when only one language is involved. Liaison interpreting requires the interpreter to make use of all his/her intuitive skills to clearly understand the objectives each of the parties hopes to obtain from the meeting and what are the proper tones, nuances and intent that lie behind the means of expression that are culturally often very different. Communication between the parties must be continuously encouraged, facilitated and revived, even when negotiations continue for hours without a coffee break. At a business lunch or dinner, it even means having to translate the entire menu, ingredients and preparation methods included! Qualifications required for this type of activity Same as the above, but a Foreign Language degree is also sufficient. o Hostess: personal attention, a good memory, a pleasant smile ... it's not easy to fit into a company's sales team at a trade fair quickly and effortlessly! A hostess must immediately memorize "who's who" at the stand, what the company does, how the promotion material is organized and what information she may furnish visitors directly. Plus, in order not to seem a "fish out of water" she must also intuit the company's mode of dealing with outside contacts (listen to all information requests? take down information for future contact? discourage those who are "just looking"?) and never, under any circumstances, must she appear bored if the flow of visitors drops off. Qualifications required for this type of activity: If the Hostess is not required to provide liaison interpreting, a Secondary School education with specialisation in modern languages is sufficient. Elena Cordani, Interlinguae Managing Director, together with other colleagues from European translation companies and free lance translators were actively involved in the various task force meetings, which commenced at the beginning of 2003. Abstract from the Introduction of the standard: "The purpose of this European standard is to establish and define the requirements for the provision of quality services by translation providers. It encompasses the core translation process and all other related aspects involved in providing the service, including quality assurance and traceability. This standard offers both translation service providers and their clients a description and definition of the entire service. A recent article in the Common Sense Advisory (by Nataly Kelly and filed under ?Translation & Localization, Language Industry' 19 June 2009) included some interesting observations on the jobs of translators. We mention them in summary here as it is a constant mainstay of our relationship with clients to put across the importance of establishing a relationship with a professional translation service provider. In essence most people don't value what translators do. Translators work tirelessly to dispel the myth that any person who speaks two languages can be a translator. Yet, this is the attitude faced on a near-daily basis. The job is so oft-misunderstood that we frequently hear comments like, "Oh, my sister took some French in High School? I bet she'd be a great translator!" This is akin to telling your doctor, "I took a biology class once? I bet I'd be great at your job!" Yet, it is this unfortunate and inaccurate perception that translators constantly face ? and wish to erase. Interlinguae looks to establish long term relationships with clients so that terminology can be recorded in glossaries and memory banks so ensuring conformity and a significant degree of cost-saving in all future jobs. In this way the corporate identity of the client is enhanced and their own clients respond to the quality and certainty which they see in both promotional and technical documentation and literature.
