13/12/2011 - GMDN WRAP-UP MEETING IN LUXEMBOURG On 8th and 9th December 2011, while people in the southern countries of Europe were taking advantage of the national holidays and having a pre-Christmas break, an important meeting took place in Luxembourg, hosted by the European Commission and attended, among others, by Interlinguae. This was the GMDN (Global Medical Devices Nomenclature) wrap-up meeting.
The European Commission supports the translation of the GMDN terms and definitions into 20 European languages with the aim of ensuring a comprehensive and harmonised clinical terminology. This nomenclature is already being used by companies that manufacture any kind of medical device from orthopaedic implants to ophthalmic technology, from healthcare tools to lab equipment devices, not only in Europe but all over the world.
Why is a harmonized clinical terminology so important?
Because it helps us to find the exact code, definition and description of every medical device in every language and to avoid misunderstanding when buying and using these devices. This nomenclature will benefit patients across the world, because it promotes comprehensive terminology based medical records, covering the needs of regulators, the medical device industry and healthcare professionals.
Why was Interlinguae invited to the GMDN meeting?
Because Interlinguae, as Italian shareholder of ETC Europe, an outstanding translation company based in Brussels, has translated the present GMDN into Italian. Elena Cordani, as CEO of Interlinguae, and Federica Ravasio, as representative of its translation team, attended the wrap-up meeting, together with colleagues from the other EU languages.
At the end of the two-day meeting in Luxembourg, Lorella Cattaruzza, as representative of the Commission, thanked all participants and translators for having done a good job that will benefit all EU patients and citizens.
27/10/2011 - WHAT'S NEW ABOUT MACHINE TRANSLATION AND EN 15038? Over the past month, Interlinguae has been busy improving and reaffirming its connections with the international translation community by attending significant conferences in England and Italy.
On September 23rd, Interlinguae’s director, Elena Cordani, travelled to England to attend the annual conference of the Association of Translation Companies, one of the oldest such associations in the world. At the conference, attendants discussed a broad variety of subjects, including marketing their companies to a wider audience, targeting niche translation opportunities, and the fostering of new generations of linguists and translators. Of particular importance in discussion at the conference was the growth of Machine Translation (MT). With the growth in sophistication and effectiveness of translation technology, this previously ineffective form of translation has grown in importance, and, while yet far from perfect, may yet form an important part of the translation industry.
Subsequently, on October 19th, Elena also travelled to Milan to attend the General Assembly of Federlingue, the Italian Translation Association that brings together companies specialising in translation, interpreting, language services and language courses. At this conference, attendants discussed the EN 15038 Standard for Translation Services, as well as attending a seminar on improving the visibility of translation companies.
Although the current season of conferences has passed, Interlinguae will continue to foster link between itself and other translation companies and associations, both in Italy and Britain and beyond.
